Major League Baseball’s 2022 Opening Day is here… again. After 14 teams played their openers on Thursday, the league’s other 16 teams are all in action Friday to begin their 2022 seasons. The Yankees got their 2022 off on the right foot on the field (after not coming to an extension agreement with Aaron Judge), beating the Red Sox in 11 innings with Josh Donaldson hitting a walk-off single. The Phillies, Dodgers and Rays also started their seasons with wins, and the Mets, Blue Jays and Braves are in action on Friday night.

Friday, the schedule is a bit more robust with 12 games (which includes four non-openers). The Cubs-Brewers matchup was postponed due to inclement weather. Here’s a look at Friday’s scoreboard:

Some more from Mets-Nats

Here’s a look at the benches-clearing incident at Nats Park:

Benches clear in DC…

The Mets and Nats have the first benches-clearing incident of the year. Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch in the face in the fifth inning on a bunt attempt. This comes after Pete Alonso was hit in a scary incident last night. Buck Showalter was visibly upset.

José Berríos departs after one out in rough start

The Blue Jays ace surrendered that aforementioned early lead and retired only one batter before his first start of the season was finished. Oddly enough, this is the second year in a row the Rangers have been involved in an Opening Day start that saw the pitcher record just one out before departing. Last year, they were on the other side of things, with Kyle Gibson retiring one Royal before hitting the showers.

And Mitch Garver just slugged a two-run homer to build a 6-0 lead for the Rangers.

Rangers jump ahead early

The new-look Rangers didn’t waste long getting on the board against the Blue Jays. Texas plated four runners in the top of the first, with both marquee offseason additions (Corey Seager and Marcus Semien) crossing the plate. Brad Miller also hit a home run. The Blue Jays have the offensive firepower to get back into this one, so don’t write it off as a Rangers win just yet.

I cursed Sanmartin because he’s thrown more balls than strikes some 34 pitches into his night.

Sanmartin time

I’m intrigued by Reds left-hander Reiver Sanmartin. He’s not a top prospect and he doesn’t check the usual boxes, but I want to see if he has enough command and deception to stick around the back of Cincy’s rotation.

And the Dodgers win 5-3 as Kimbrel gets Bryant to whiff on a breaking ball.

Some good drama in Colorado. Dodgers lead by two with two outs in the ninth, but Kris Bryant is up as the tying run vs. Craig Kimbrel.

Webb’s day finished

Logan Webb’s first start of the year is in the books. He tossed six innings against the Marlins, holding them off the board while surrendering five hits and a walk. Webb struck out three batters and is in line for the win provided the Giants’ bullpen can hold onto their 3-0 lead.

Brand-new game in Philly

The Phillies, on the strength of their powerful offense and what was a good Aaron Nola outing, appeared to have opening day easily in hand. It was 6-1 before the top of the seventh. It’s now 6-5. A three-run Seth Brown homer knocked Nola out of the game and the Phillies much-advertised as suspect defense committed two errors. Looks like they’ll have to sweat it out, unless the offense decides to explode again.

Duran makes MLB debut for Twins

Jhoan Duran made his big-league debut for the Twins on Friday, and boy was he pumping gas. Over the course of his first inning of work, he threw seven fastballs. Those heaters clocked in at 99.9 mph on average. Again, that’s on average. It’s unclear if the Twins have given up the ghost on Duran starting again some day. For now, though, he could be a flame-throwing asset in relief.
