After a few leaked shots from the Batgirl set, Leslie Grace saw fit to break things up with an official outfit reveal, and it’s magnificent.
A nice milestone is always exciting, especially when it involves a highly-anticipated project like the upcoming Batgirl movie. After years of uncertainty and the occasional worry about who would end up directing, it looks like things are finally progressing smoothly. So how about an actual shot of Leslie Grace as Batgirl herself in full superhero garb?
Grace, who plays Barbara Gordon in the impending film and was recently spotted on the Batgirl set as Barbara, just posted a frankly breathtaking image of herself in her character’s actual crime-fighting outfit, and it’s one heck of a way to debut a suit. Taking plenty of inspiration from the designs from the comics, it’s a costume that would make anybody look up on a dark Gotham night and say, “hey cool.” Posting the photo to Instagram, Grace looks ready for action and also ready to lead the charge of superheroes no longer wearing obtrusive dark eye makeup under their masks. The comic book movie world is ready to heal.
“I use their expectations against them,” Grace posted in the caption. “That will be their weakness. Not mine. Let them all underestimate me… And when their guard is down, and their pride is rising, let me kick their butts.” This quote is from the well-liked 2003 comic miniseries Batgirl: Year One written by Scott Beatty and Chuck Dixon. While the plot of the Batgirl film is still largely under wraps, many assume that it will take at least some inspiration from that particular comic story arc. The fact that Michael Keaton will supposedly appear as Batman may lend credence to that theory.
The suit itself looks excellent. It seems to take clear cues from the more recent iterations of the outfit seen in the comics and animated series like the always plug-worthy Harley Quinn on HBO Max. Clad in moveable leather and just enough gadgets strapped to her belt and leg, it looks like practicality is the name of the game here. Frankly, it’s great to see superhero suits like this that focus on function while still boasting a snazzy form factor.
Batgirl will be helmed by the directing duo of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, known for the 2015 Belgian crime film Black as well as for directing Bad Boys for Life. Much like how James Gunn effortlessly dances between Marvel and DC, the directing team is also set to work on the upcoming Ms. Marvel series for Disney Plus. The script for Batgirl is penned by Christina Hodson, who also wrote for 2020’s fantastic Birds of Prey.
So with a cast and staff like that along with such a great looking super suit, fans and newcomers alike have plenty of reasons to get excited for Batgirl. Here’s hoping it follows the quality trend of recent DC offerings like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Not necessarily in the “bloody and surprisingly dark but somehow still hilarious” aspect, but hey, it would be fun to talk about.
Batgirl is set to premiere on HBO Max in 2022.
