Several 4-H members from Taylor County participated in the recent District 7 Food Show. (I would appreciate hearing from other counties on how your members did. Please forward them using the contact information listed at the end of this column.) Two members received first place recognition: Leighton Phillips, side dish, Juniors (third through fifth grade); and Larsyn Allen, appetizer, Intermediate (middle school age).

Three Seniors (high school) earned recognition: Lilly Walker, second place, appetizer; Rachael Dawkins, second place, exhibit; and Jaxon Potter, fourth place, side dish.

The Rutland name came up twice in Juniors. Cash Rutland was fourth in healthy dessert and Gail Rutland fourth for main dish. Also, Beau Ross took second in appetizer.

Among Intermediates, there were four others recognized. Ella Hays was second in side dish, Daisy Smith fourth in healthy dessert, Rustyn Ross fourth in main dish and KC Dauer fifth in exhibit.

While preparing their entries, these “all right” kids not only had to know how to prepare their dish, they also had to be ready to present it in an attractive way, answer questions and explain the health benefits of the dish.

Keep in mind that some of these entries were presented by kids as young as third grade. They are comfortable early on in the kitchen. That sure sounds like a handy life skill to be mastering at any age, let alone by someone so young.

Congratulations to all these young contestants. And, again, please send information you may have on any winners from other area counties.
